I paint to make real my inner visions and to inspire people. I believe an image has the power to shift our emotions, provoke thought, alter our perceptions, and touch our psyche. Our culture is obsessed with images of the negative variety, and the media keeps us constantly fed. As an artist, it is my mission to honor the image that emits positivism. I am compelled to create works that radiate vibrancy, emanate tranquility, and imbue the viewer with a quiet sense of celebration. I aspire to bring forth a feminine energy that is overt yet subtle. My goal with my artwork is to beautify, as well as to communicate.
My artwork often originates from an inner vision, and then translates to paper. I use my drawings as a template from which to work. My paintings are fluid in that they may deviate from my original vision and/or drawing due to either technical challenges or simply a mistake that may take me in a new and unexpected direction.
I love traditional oil paint on canvas. In addition to canvas, I enjoy using burlap and linen as sources for my media foundation. Given the loose and decorative nature of my tapestries, I feel free to experiment with multiple media. I use dye, yarn, thread, acrylic paint, and a variety of other materials. As my work evolves, I am sure my use of materials and my reasons for using them will shift as well.
My early work was extremely personal and emotionally charged. Then I went through a period of media and concept experimentation during my undergraduate studies. The next few years I began simplifying my iconography and embarking on my investigations into symbols and their meaning. My graduate studies in Art Education led me to look at feminist artists as well as work as an educator through a feminist perspective. My interest in a feminine vocabulary correlates to my interest in a universal symbology. I have yet to create artwork that can give a clear definition to what it is that I do, as I currently embrace my path as a professional artist.
